Staffed
Rostering for Sydney 2000 Olympics
Staffed
The challenge
The Sydney SuperDome required a large number of casual staff for the Sydney 2000 Olympic games. Over 50,000 shifts were needed withiin a one month period. Existing paper based systems were insufficient for the task  particularly when tracking skills and abilities of casual staff, and ensuring that the award conditions are met for turnaround, shift times are harmonious, etc.
The solution
Extensive meetings with Ernst and Young, consultants to SuperDome only generated recommendations of systems costing over $150,000 to perform the required task. While this lengthy evaluation process continued, ish wrote a simple system to track employment of casual staff and their skills.
As time progressed, ish added functionality to the system which met all of the SuperDome’s requirements. Staff could be rostered, award conditions matched, searches performed for staff with appropriate skills and availabilities, and reports printed. Staff details could also be tracked.
ish wrote integration features for printing photo ID cards (the Fox photo ID system), Kronos payroll systems and JD Edwards accounting.
For roughly one tenth the cost of the off-the-shelf system, the SuperDome had a custom solution crafted for their exact needs. It has been in use over the last few years, and in that time has needed almost no administration or maintenance.
