Course and class codes

Making codes make sense

When you create course and class codes in onCourse you want them to be meaningful to your business, easily understood by your staff, and also short enough to publish in printed brochures and for your students to write on enrolment forms.

You also need to ensure that the portion of the code that rolls over – the last numeral in the class code – does not have a special meaning assigned to it, as this code will regularly change as you create each class.

An example of a meaningful course-class code:

YOG2 - HOM01

The meaning assigned to each part of the code:

Course code

YOG Three letters of text to identify the course, in this case, Yoga. The letters can be quickly interpreted as to which course they are referring to.

2 A numeral to indicate the level of the course, in this case, stage 2.

Class code

HO Two letters to refer to the venue, or organising centre for the class, in this case Hobart. You would put this part of the code in the class code, as multiple centres may deliver the same course across your business.

M A letter to indicate the day of the week i.e. M = Monday (different letters needed for Thursday and Sunday)

01 This is the numeric part of the class that will increase as you roll over, so the next class will be 02.
