Getting Started with onCourse

onCourse comes with a detailed user manual on our website, which provides you with all the information you need to install and run onCourse.

The following information gives a general overview of the main things you need to be aware of in order to run onCourse, as well as useful links to the relevant sections of the user manual.

To get onCourse up and running, you need to install the Server and the Client(s). The server application manages your data and the Client application allows you to login, edit and view your data. Before you start you need to consider the system hardware requirements for onCourse, to make sure your system is up to the task.

If you are starting out small in terms of your use of onCourse, you can use the inbuilt database that comes with the onCourse Server. If you decide to go with an external database you can choose between MySql, Microsoft SQL or Oracle Server, if you think that might be you, you can read up about the database considerations here.

Download the Server and Client version for your operating system from our website. You can mix the platforms within one installation, so for example the Server could be running on Linux, some Clients on Windows and some on Mac. Just make sure you follow either the Windows instructions or the Mac instructions.

Once you've installed onCourse, the first time you start up the Server it'll ask you a couple of questions about what kind of file you want to create and where you want your Server to reside on your system. Remember that you need to make sure the Server is up and running before you open up the Client, otherwise the Client will have no Server to talk to.
